My iMac makes a sound but won't start.
Is there something else I can do besides unplugging everything and holding the power button for 10 seconds?

Yes there is. Try starting in the Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key at startup. If it does start up it can take up to ten minutes to complete. The Mac OS is cleaning and fixing things during this process. I hope this works for you.
