Migration wizard doesn't connect two Apple machines

I just bought a MacBook Pro 2020 running Catalina and I am trying to use the migration wizard to bring files over from my iMAC mid 2010 running High Sierra.


The migration assistant opens properly on both machines, and I make these selections:

iMAC - "To another Mac"

MacBook - "From a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk"


I hit continue and the iMAC shows up as a choice to select on the MacBook and then I hit continue. That's when I receive a message saying MacBook can not connect to the iMAC.


I have verified (using system preferences>network) that both machines are running on the same wireless network.


What would be the next steps?

I strongly recommend that you DO NOT use a wireless network to connect your two Macs. The transfer should be done via a wired USB connection. It is too much data for wireless and what happens is that the data is often corrupted. You might keep in mind that the same is true for downloading OS updates and upgrades. The transfer shouldn't typically take longer than an hour or so. I hope this helps you. Good luck.
