You do not say exact what macOS you currently have and what you are trying to download:

If it is the point update, try the

Combo update macOS 10.15.6 https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2048?locale=en_US

if it is the full installer:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/macos-catalina/id1466841314?mt=12&l=en-us

If you continue to have an issue, try the down from Safe Boot

SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc. Login and run the download.

Also, in addition to the excellent information provided here, the cause could be that your download got corrupted if you were doing it via Wi Fi. That often happens. If the file continues to be unable to load, I would put the file in the trash, empty it and do another download via a direct USB connection to your modem/router. While downloading, it's important to stay off of the internet until it's complete.
