Backing up Files with Time Machine + External Drive

When using Time Machine and an external drive to backup my files, do I need to leave the external drive plugged into my computer 24/7 in order for it to do periodical backups?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.14

Yes, unless you manually plug it in then manual launch the Time Machine "backup now".
