How do I change the type line background in Messages from gray to white?

I just got a MacBook Air. In Messages, the background of the line on which I type texts is gray. I can't read the black print against the gray background; I need greater contrast. On my iPhone and my iPad, this line has a white background so that I can easily read what I am typing. How can I turn the background on my text line to white?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

System Preferences > Accessibility > Display has two options to increase overall contrast.
