am i able to update from Mac OS Sierra to the most current software? I have a early 2011 Macbook pro.

Hi, welcome to the Apple Users Community.

You will at best be able to upgrade to High Sierra

Your unit is unfortunately not capable of running Mojave or Catalina which require a 2012 or newer unit.
