deleting time machine backups

Several years ago, not knowing any better, I tried deleting my time old machine backup files by dragging them to the trash. How can I delete these files from the trash? emptying the trash is not an option.

You'll need to reformat the TM Drive as so many links get lost when you use Finder to delete TM files, but you might try disabling TM in Sys Prefs to see if you can then empty the Trash.
