How do I retrieve messages from iCloud

iMac 27″, macOS 10.15

If you had messages in iCloud turned on Keep all your messages in iCloud - Apple Support and those messages were deleted, then they are permanently gone. If that feature wasn't turned on, you can restore from a backup -- Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support.

Thank you for responding to my question. I opened my Messages App, and tried to locate past iMessages, but could find some of the ones I was looking for. Any suggestions on how to do this ? Thanks.

You don't, you retrieve them from the Messages app.
