Ethernet port on iMac (2009)

The ethernet port on my iMac has stopped working. The cable is fine as it works with my work laptop. (OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6) everything else is working fine, just the port decided to stop working, suggestions please! My Mac is pretty old (2009 apparently) is is just on its way out?

Begin by doing a SMC reset with all peripheral disconnected and then test. If that does not work pleaser resect the NVRAM.
