Mac Mini (M1) 2020, LG UHD monitor flickers on dark colours.

Hi everyone,

I’ve received yesterday the new display for my new Mac mini M1, the LG 32UN500-W.

the monitor works great except the whales out color while in HDR mode m, but that’s a know issue.

the most annoying issue it’s that the display randomly flickers and shows lines when the display shows dark tinted colours.

restarted the Mac issue persisted.

changed HDMI Cables, issue persisted.

Fully restored Mac mini in “recovery mode, issue persist.

the issue don’t happen on my 16” ‘Mac book with the same external display as Mac mini,

software glitch? Need to have the Mac mini replaced?

another thing that I’ve noticed is that the same display with the same usb c - display port cable plugged in the 16 k ches MacBook Pro, under the system profiler the external display can get detected correctly and even the serial number is reported, but nothing of this is visible on the Mac mini with the M1

I also have the LG 32 UN500-W and have the same flickering issue.

When I boot the Mac mini, the sign on page background is all vertically lined (corrupted) until I sign in, then it's OK.

Also, if you visit this page: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/ there is a video playing at the top of the page, it causes terrible flicker.

I can get rid of the flicker if I go into the monitor settings and change the black level to "High"

(Picture -> Picture Adjust -> Black Level - High

Although this works, I would prefer not to have to set this, I don't like the look as much, the blacks look washed out.

Seems like a software issue to me.

Regards,

Derek

I have the exact same problem with a DELL S3221QS, which worked perfectly with my previous PC.

It's especially bad when the dark mode is toggled on or when I'm watching TV shows with darker scenes.

I've also tried multiple different cables and connectors, monitor settings etc., but nothing really fixes the issue.

How come this still hasn't been fixed or at least addressed after such a long time? The new M1 Macs made me want to give macOS a chance and I've been really enjoying it, but this issue does leave a bad taste in my mouth...

Amazingly, my M1 Mac Mini and my Philips 4K TV sorted the problem out between each other, without my intervention. I left them connected and running overnight and when I looked in the morning, the problem had sorted itself out. Now have no flickering or black outs and have been able to watch F1 TV on Google Chrome (did not work on Safari), for F1 practice for the Belgian GP at Spa, with no problems. Yes I am very puzzled too. Problems do not normally sort themselves out. Oddly on looking back at the M1 Mac Logs on Console, I found the Mac Mini had restarted itself during the night after a kernel panic and I wonder if restarting the Mac with the TV connected, enabled the two systems to talk intelligibly to each other.

Thanks! Yea I’m not sure I might have to change monitor too. I’ve tested my MBP 13 (2016) and an Apple TV 4K, and both flicker a small bit, (in the same way, when a certain dark colour palette is displayed, though not as extreme as the Mac mini)

though I’ve only tested them for about 5 mins, and maybe they get worse over time?

anyway, it feels like it could be the monitor. I haven’t tested a non apple product yet.

Same problem with a MBP M1 hooked to an Acer Predator XB281HK 4k60Hz. Plenty people reporting the issue here as well: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/m1-air-ghosting-flickering-with-external-display.2271670/

This requires an urgent fix IMO. I'm considering returning the unit, my display has been working great with both PCs and MBP for years.

Also, it appears to occur an all M1 machines, be it MBP, Air or Mini.

For my LG 32UN500-W monitor the best solution that I was able to find was to go to displays, and then colors and then use the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color profile with my monitor on cinema for picture mode. it dose not fix the problem 100% but is the best that I can find, the color accuracy is also not to bad in this settings. I hope they can fix this problem soon. in the mean time I hope this help some of you.
