Apple Watch 1

So I just got an Apple Watch gen 1 and I have an iPhone 5s, it says to update my phone to the latest version but it then says that my phone is at the latest version. What do I do??

Depends what version of WatchOS is on the watch,an iphone 5s will only update to ios 12,if the watch has WatchOS6 on it then you will need a phone that has at least ios13 which is an iphone 6s or higher.
