Hello I'm about to buy a new mac air and need to back up all the info from this computer. What should I do?

Use Time Machine. It is on your Mac. You should use it all the time on every Mac.

Time machine is easy and backs everything up, if you just need your files and documents, simply drag and drop these onto another external hard drive. sSnce you are getting a newer MacBook you might not need all that other OSX data.
i perform both time machine and copy/paste files onto an external hard drive.
