I have an older Apple Watch Series 3 and was thinking about sending it to a friend overseas (in Japan). Will it work? Usually I know they don't work in different countries with the differing cellular network types. But since it's GPS only will it still be able to connect to her iPhone 11 or not? Is this possible? Or would she need to have a Japan-specific Apple Watch?

Just to be clear. The GPS only Apple Watch works wherever your iPhone works. And even if your iPhone does not work, it will still tell time, and connect to WiFi (where you have the WiFi password, or WiFi access is unlocked).

No a Gps only watch will work just fine.
