My external hard disk is not readable in the disk options in the time machine

I want to backup data on my macbook but there is no option for the external hard drive I have connected

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.1

Have you formatted this external hard drive through Disk Utility.

Time machine does not see my new external drive. I have a new MacBook pro and wanted to do the first time machine back up on a new external hard drive but time machine does not see it. I can see it on the desk top and in finder. Is there something I need to do to prep it for time machine? Ventura update installed.
