If it is within 14 days of purchase - Return it to Apple
Prudence and abundance of caution may suggest return asap especially with an on again off again loud knocking happening. As for a 37 year relationship with Apple - kind of over -the-top to move away because of single disappointing experience .
Personally, been with Apple since the G4 12" Powerbook & Tiger ( what a joy ) and traded for the first Intel MBP and had a GPU failure 6 months after purchase. That was the Only disappointing experience and have remained loyal Apple even now.
Good Luck on whatever decision / route one may go.
I think you are probably right. Thank you for your suggestion.
Yesterday, the noise stopped - but today the loud knocking noise was back. It's hard to believe a brand new machine can go so wrong. I've been using Apple since 1984 - but this sort of thing could drive me away.
It's interesting. I have, for now, deleted the Touch ID functionality. When I open the Mac using my password, there is no noise whatsoever. Most strange.
I'll try to arrange a visit to a local authorised Apple service centre soon. No actual Apple Stores where I live.
Thanks again for your advice.
Most interesting. If possible and time permits would like to follow this once it has been looked at. Never read or heard of such a thing on the new M1 but alway a first.
