Is the app worth paying for?
Can we get practically all channels we would normally see on cable? Also is there a way to have the Apple TV app like chrome cast and watch from your television?

The Apple TV app on your iPhone will give you aches to:
- iTunes Store movies and TV shows (buy or rent);
- Apple TV+ channel featuring Apple Originals, by subscription;
- other premium Apple TV app Channels, each by subscription. [list for the US at Macwold.com]
- Home Sharing content (e.g. home videos) from a computer can be streamed over your home network to Apple devices with the TV app
Other content provider apps can have their content linked to the Apple TV app, and be featured in Watch Now and Up Next. This feature is exclusive to Apple devices that can have these third party apps. Availability of supported apps in the Apple TV app - Apple Support
Other content provider apps will not be linked through the Apple TV app (e.g. Netflix).

Channels with live programming will often require a separate subscription with a TV provider. That TV provider may publish their own app, or make deals with content providers to access services through each network channel’s app using TV provider credentials. TV providers can be either cable TV or internet streaming TV.
Ergo, this last part would normally not be through the Apple TV app.
