If it's the Thunderbolt display (Lightning bolt icon on plug, no USB cable) you need a Thunderbolt 3 adapter.

If it's the older LED display with Mini DisplayPort (no Lightning bolt icon on the plug) and USB, you need a USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter, such as:
