my imac has frozen during the update. what do i do to fix it

My iMac has frozen during the software update to Big Sur. how do I fix it?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

Hi christopherfromeynsford,


The first step is to wait. Give the update at least 4 hours first. If it has been that long, try this:

  1. Turn off the iMac by pressing and holding the power button.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Turn the iMac back on, and see if it completes.
  4. If it still does not, try Safe Mode: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support
