Safari crashing

For the last week our mid 2011 Mac has started to be very slow and Safari keeps crashing. Any ideas? I have cleared cache, turned off and unplugged, checked activity monitor but am still getting nowhere.

I don't see any of the usual suspects in the report but do see some things that may be contribution to the performance loss or just not needed.


ExpressVPN: unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer's or bank's servers, they are useless. Public VPN's are anything but private.  


Chrome: the Chrome browser is a know system resource hog and data miner. If you don't like Safari give Firefox a try. It's more secure than Chrome.


Flash: Flash is a dead product as Adobe ended its support as of the 1st of the year. Uninstall it and its preference pane.


Gemini 2: it shouldn't be used on a Mac as it can remove images that shouldn't be removed and mess up systems, apps or Photos libraries. Uninstall it according to the developer's instructions.


Also boot into Safe Mode by booting with the Shift key held down and check there to see if the problem persists.  Reboot normally and test again.


NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following; 

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts 

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Hi ianfromquinns rocks,


I believe we need to proceed with an EtreCheck report. EtreCheck is a useful app to diagnose issues, both hardware and software. It is trusted by many users. Please follow the steps outlined below:


  1. Go to the Mac App Store and search for "EtreCheck."
  2. Download it. It is a free and trusted app; as it is on the Mac App Store, and only trusted apps can be submitted.
  3. Run the report, and put it in a post, as seen here - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-250000211
  4. If it asks for Full Disk Access, follow the prompts to enable it.
