Typing “th” quickly on my iPad air2 selects prior text and the next letter overwrites the text. Help!

I type quickly. When I type a word beginning with “th” , such as there the they this then them, the “th” selects a big chunk of prior text(in blue) and the next letter “e” or “i” overwrites all the selected text. This happens all the time in fact it just happened at the beginning of this sentence!

I have tried shutting off all keyboard settings and it still happens. I shut down the message app and rebooted the iPad and it still happens.

Any suggestions?

Hello Judy,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities.

Let’s see if we can help you out with your iPad today. Are you using the built-in keyboard or an external keyboard? Is the iPad updated to the current version of iPadOS 14.4? To verify, go to Settings > General > About.

Have you tried force restarting the iPad after turning off predictive text and autocorrect? If not, turn those features off and follow the steps found in Restart your iPad

If you still see this same behavior reach back out to us.

Have a great day!

Hi Judy,

Thanks for getting back to us. Let’s keep digging and see if we can determine what’s causing this behavior.

Is this happening with only one app or every app that you use with the built-in keyboard?

Do you happen to recall when this first began? After a particular update or new app installed? Maybe after installing a 3rd-party keyboard, and you later deleted it? Or have you tried another keyboard to see if it continues?

Other than restarting, have you tried any resets on your iPad Air 2? Or have you spoken with Apple Get Support?

Cheers!

Hi Sterling,

This problem behavior happens in every app that I type in. As far as I remember it has always happened with this iPad but I’ve had it for several years and it’s possible it wasn’t happening when I first got it. So, sorry I can’t tell you if it started after a specific update. I have never installed a third party keyboard. Don’t know how to actually. I followed instructions to shut down all keyboard features, force close the message app and then do an immediate restart of the iPad. Even with zero features enabled I still had the same problem. ??? Maybe I should do a “reset” of the iPad itself to see if that fixes the problem? Maybe I got a virus from downloading a game app? I have not spoken with Apple Support. I sure appreciate your taking an interest in this strange problem. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

I have a similar problem on my iPad mini, latest version. I also type fast, and when I type anything that begins with “th” only the “h” shows. Yet I am 100% sure that when I type “the” it is clicking three times. I can’t find the problem documented but I see a lot of other posts where people are typing “he” for “the.”
