Upgrade to Big Sur

I've tried twice to install Big Sur. I downloaded it, hit "continue", etc. and then it restarts and the progress bar goes a 1/4" and then stops. It stays this way for hours until I shut down the computer and start again. I have the latest version of Catalina on my 2017, 27" iMac. Any ideas why my computer freezes and refuses to update? Thanks.

You do need 35.5GBs of free space to install Big Sur.

Assuming you have that, try while in Safe Mode.
