Since I upgraded to Big Sur, after opening an email (sideview), the Mail columns go back to a standard width forcing me to continuously resize the columns to my desired width once the email is closed...
How to block the columns width?

The reading pane is below the message list, like this?
And then you double-click to open the message in a separate window, and... does it go to split screen, with the message viewer on the left and that particular message on the right, sort of like this?
I have the reading pane below and when I click on an email it opens on half the screen to the right.
When the email is closed the columns width (from, subject, date, size...) have all changed again...
I hope this makes it clearer?
There have been several reports of Mail suddenly triggering this split screen situation, and so far it is unclear (at least for me) why this happens. When you close the message, I suppose that Mail will take over the whole screen (ie be in fullscreen mode), right? What if you then press escape to get out of fullscreen, don't the columns "remember" their widths?
I am not sure I understand... you are using Column Layout, right? And have message preview to the right? Are you closing and opening the preview? If not, then what causes the columns to change?
