Activation Lock

I was given a used iPad mini. I followed the restore and update procedures. It has an activation lock. My friend who gave it to me claims they do not have a iCloud account linked to this device. We tried using find my to erase the iPad and the device did not work.

Here are the Apple support pages that outline the Activation Lock - and the only mechanisms by which it can be turned off:

Turn off Activation Lock – Apple Support

As you will discover, unless you are the owner of the AppleID that was last used to activate the device, or unless you can secure the cooperation of the previous owner, you’ll not be able to defeat or bypass the Activation Lock. Without documentary evidence that you are the original owner (such as sales receipt showing the serial number), Apple won’t assist - and nobody here will be able to help you.

Unless your friend bought that iPad new and still has purchase receipts and matching personal ID and a willingness to discuss this directly with Apple, recycle it.

Without the Apple ID and password, it’s useless.

Activation Lock will block access. Activation Lock is a theft deterrent, and it wouldn't be a deterrent if it were easy to bypass.
