Using Catalina and Music. Command-L used to scroll to the playing song within the entire list of my collection; now it shows the playing song, but only within the album it's on. This the only way to see the current music selection, or is there another command to show the active selection and retain song list view?

No, this appears to be the current behaviour of go to current song.
If you haven't already found it View > Show Filter Field can be useful for bringing specific content into focus, after selecting the target item you can clear the filter field to show it in the context of the songs around it.
