Software update

My macbook air is on high Sierra and my computer does not show me any option to update to the most current software version. Not under system preferences or in the app store update section. I have no idea how I can I update my computer

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and if your MacBook Air is a 2012 or newer model, click on Catalina or Big Sur. If not, you can't.
