iCloud files not showing in Finder

When I log into iCloud in a browser, I see tons of files, but in Finder, there is nothing. I see greyed out sub-folders for Garage Band, iMovies, Keynote, etc. (I don't know why, because I've never created those), but I do not see any of the files that can be seen in the browser.

I've checked and unchecked iCloud in Preferences and logged out and logged back in. Still nothing.

How do I resolve this?

Thanks

Thanks for trying Brian_P7, but this does not address my question. I don't have any problem accessing iCloud from my devices. Thew problem is accessing files through Finder on my Mac. For example, I can access a number of files on iCloud through my phone or via the browser, but nothing is visible via Finder on my Mac.

Here is what I was able to gather:

  1. Try rebooting in Safe Mode twice in a row. That's an odd one that fixed the same issue for some users and I've seen this solution also for other types of issues.
  2. Repeat the StackExchange procedure and if you see "Setting up iCloud..." for too long, relaunch Finder (Apple Menu > Force Quit..., select Finder and click Relaunch
  3. Lastly I've seen users waiting days for the synch to complete (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252179034, for instance)

After the above, I'm out of ideas and I recommend your contacting Apple Support: Get Support

Thank you 6x6, but that still didn't fix the problem.

1) I Uploaded a file to iCloud with my phone. It shows on my iPad and in the browser, but not on my Mac. This shows that the issue isn't with the account, but with the Mac.

2) I tried to upload a file to iCloud via the Mac. It shows up in Finder on the Mac, with a "progress circle" next to it and a greyed out cloud, but not on my devices or on browser. That progress circle didn't move for more than 24 hours.

3) I deleted the CloudDocs file and restarted bird via Terminal as suggested on Stackexchange above. It looked for a while like it had solved it. I saw the "Setting up iCloud Drive" message for almost 24 hours, but it just stayed stuck there with a spinning gear wheel.

4) As suggested by some as a solution to unstuck the "setting up iCloud" process, I unchecked "iCloud" in the Finder preferences, shut down, restarted and re-checked iCloud. I'm back with the same list of sub-directories for apps I have never used (e.g.: automator, garage band, iMovies, etc.) but not the files I know exist on iCloud. That one file I uploaded via the Mac is there, with a "progress circle" next to it and a greyed out cloud.

iCloud still doesn't work on my Mac. Grrrrr

Thanks again for trying to solve my problem, 6x6.

After more than one hour on the phone with Apple Support, I have identified the sources of the problem, which are two-fold.

1) The instance of OS I was running, for some reason, wasn't showing the "Desktop and Documents" option in System Preferences. Re-installing the OS resolved that issue.

2) I mis-understood how the iCloud Drive works. It copies the entire Desktop and Documents folders from the Mac hard drive to the iCloud drive. That is not what I want to do. I do not want the entire folders (they are too big for the 5MG of free iCloud space). I only want to save a few, select files to iCloud Drive to make them available to my devices. That's not a possible option.

So, I've given up.

Thanks for trying to help

Hey there, Megantic.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! Thanks for posting about iCloud Drive items not syncing quite as you'd expect. We'd be glad to see what we can do to help out.

Are these part of Desktop and Documents or are these specific items that have been uploaded to iCloud Drive separately that aren't appearing? The "If your files don't update to iCloud Drive" section of Access iCloud Drive files from your iPhone and other devices. The whole link has great info about iCloud Drive so be sure to read over all of it, including that specific section. It also explains why you might see folders like the ones you mentioned in your post.

Let us know if those steps are helpful.

Be well.

Then try creating a 2nd account (System Preferences > Users & Groups, click the locked to unlock the settings and click + in the right pane.) Once created, set your Apple ID (the same you are currently using) and enable iCloud Drive.

Using another account helps us determine whether the issue is user-account-related or computer-related. You can remove this new account after testing the issue.

I also found this thread: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/313716/icloud-drive-wont-sync-on-mac. The solution (2nd posting w/ 50 up-votes) involves using Terminal.

Another thing I gathered from researching the issue is that synching files takes a lot of time; some users mention waiting 24 h for their files to synch. In any case, you should start seeing a "progress circle" next to iCloud Drive in Finder when the Mac is synching with iCloud.

I am sorry but you are mistaken about #2. You can indeed choose to share "Desktop and Documents" but it is only on option. On my iMac, I do not have this selected for the same reason you mentioned. Yet I'm able to paste any file onto iCloud Drive and they show up properly.

Now, perhaps there is hope. You state in #1 that re-installing the OS actually lead to show a feature that was missing (and, again, one that you don't need/want.) I'm wondering if this indirectly fixed your system. Could you try again and see if Finder now works properly?
