Hi I would like to know how I can get my 2009 iMac to run on "Big Sur" OS or are there alternatives I can pursue?

as Macs get older they will no longer support third party apps

This is not true. As apps develop so, like the OS, they may have hardware requirements that an older machine can't meet. But the older machine will continue to run any version of any app that is compatible with it. There is no situation where a Mac will lose the ability to support 3rd party apps.
