How can I set my Apple Watch 6 so it counts stairs?

NO. It doesn’t record flights of stairs automatically. It records changes in altitude. It will note, for example, that I climbed 249 feet in altitude during a walk and it will record the “flights of stairs” as 3... I guess each flight of stairs was 83 feet high. This is useless. What’s going on here and how do we fix it. That is the question.

FWIW one user said he talked to some Apple Watch engineers and they suggested:

  1. locking the water (swipe up and hit the water drop),
  2. washing the watch with alcohol or soap/water,
  3. flush the water out per the instructions - pull on crown.

It worked! Voila! Miscounting flights of stairs problem fixed.
