Macbook pro 13'' late 2011 excruciatingly slow

I have a macbook pro late 2011 that is running slow. On startup the fan is running on high revs and it will start after about 10 minutes or so. On CPU usage it the kernel task is using about 200%.


n. b. i recently bought it and i have zero knowledge of its history

Reset PRAM:  Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Reset  SMC:   How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support   Choose the appropriate method.

Startup in Safe mode. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201262

To leave Safe Mode, click  in the menu bar and choose “Restart”.


If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check
