I did not turn off Activation Lock before I sold my apple watch.

I did not turn off Activation Lock before I sold my apple watch. Now, he is trying to set it up and it is requiring my Apple ID and password. Can I deactivate Activation Lock without having the watch with me? If so, how do I accomplish this. Caveat: The nearest Apple store is 6 hours away, so that is not really an option.
