If I backup my photos on iCloud... can I delete them from my iPad storage to free up more memory?

If I back up my photos on my iPad to the cloud... can I delete them off my iPad to free up memory? How do I access them again? I’m old and new to icloud

Doing will free up more memory on your ipad, but when you do another icloud backup it will override the last backup.

You should look to importing your pictures to a computer an making an extra copy to a thumb drive.

You can also use 3rd party like dropbox or google photos.
