USB port malfunctioning

Sometimes when I plug in my external hard drive on the left side of my mac, it turns on, but does not mount. Any ideas on how to fix this?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.2

Possibly the inside cable from USB Drive to computer is damaged, the connector from cable to drive is not set correctly or cable to USB port on computer is loose, maybe drive is failing, maybe USB Port on computer is acting up.

Change cable from USB Drive to computer, make sure USB ports are free of dust.

Try the SMC Reset and perform this action 3 x in a row
