Frequent Crashes on iMac Unknown Cause

Hello,

I've been having seemingly random crashes quite frequently on my iMac. I've done a memory test and the RAM modules are able to pass no problem. I'm at a loss here and getting tires of losing my work. Any help is appreciated. I have attached screenshots of the error reports right after reboot.

System info:

Thank you!

iMac 27″, macOS 11.2

It is possible one of them is failing. While OWC is a good company, and will replace any failing DIMMs, they still sometimes suffer failures.

You could try running Rember overnight to see if it finds anything

Rember

.

Quit as many apps and background tasks as you can (such as menu bar items) so more RAM is available for testing. Booting into Safe mode http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 can also free up more RAM for testing, by not loading any 3rd party additions you may have installed.

.

Set Loops: [X] Maximum

and run overnight

Hi there,

I believe we need to proceed with an EtreCheck report. EtreCheck is a useful app to diagnose and identify issues, both hardware and software. It is trusted by many users. Please follow the steps outlined below:

  1. Navigate to: https://etrecheck.com and get the free version of EtreCheckPro.
  2. Download it. It is a free and trusted app. It is often recommended here on Apple Support Communities.
  3. Open EtreCheck, and before running the report, be sure to check “Allow full Drive Access” at the bottom of the EtreCheckPro window.
  4. Run the report, and put it in a post, as seen here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-250000211. We will then examine the report for issues in your Mac.

Cheers,

Jack

Thanks for the quick response, guys! I really appreciate your help. I ran both of the tests and posted the results in the text box as instructed. I have installed 3rd party RAM from OWC, I thought that might be the problem so I ran remtest to test the modules and they both passed. I also ran the apple memtest from the boot menu which also passed. There is no external storage connected to the iMac.

iMac Retina 5K Retina 27” 2019.

Get a backup, if you can.

Once the backup is completed...

Download and install and run EtreCheck, and share the report to the clipboard, then open a new reply here and then press the button that looks like a printed page to get a text input box big enough to paste the hardware and software configuration report here.

Then download DriveDx, and see if that flags anything.

Has any third-party memory been installed?

I’m not hopeful it’ll help, but also remove any external storage connected and see if that stabilizes things. Marginal USB configurations can cause problems. That solely because there’s a fair chunk of I/O-related code in the panics.

Remove Butdefender and the Bitdefender VPN client., remove MalwareBytes, remove the private internet access app, remove the cryptocurrency miner(s) (two?), remove the app cleaner smart delete app, these removed all per the vendors’ instructions, reboot, and see how stable this Mac might be. Lots of options for causing weird, there.

The storage itself looks good; nothing bad or degraded reported.

The last panic you posted shows a zone element was changed, that should have been cleared.

This is a classic blunder often caused by 3rd party kernel extensions. In this case BitDefender is the most likely suspect.

You do not need 3rd party anti-virus packages. Apple provides the tools you need, along with you own common sense not to randomly install stuff (it is the installing of stuff from questionable sources that is the weakest link in macOS security).
