Finder sidebar is very narrow

Whenever I use a finder window within an application, the sidebar is always very narrow. While the general finder window will remember the width that I choose, using the finder within an application always defaults to the narrow width (see below).

Is there a fix for this?

Thanks.

The individual applications are not referring to Finder Preferences. They are independent usage of an Apple framework class that creates a File open or save panel that appears like a Finder window, but is not. Thus, there is no means to set a permanent width for these application driven panels.
