Shapes not showing up in Preview

I'm trying to insert shapes to annotate something in Preview, but it seems as if the shape is invisible after I insert it no matter what I do. I have tried changing the color and the border, but there is only a box with the blue dots around an invisible shape. This also happens when I try to draw something. How do I fix this?
