Recovery Mode not opening

When I hold Command R for Recovery mode, a lock appears with a password entry at the bottom. I can't access Recovery Mode when I hold Command+R. Why is that/how do I open it?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

You do not paint a very big picture— what was the bigger issue that led you to Recovery? Are you the original owner of this Mac? Sounds like the Firmware password has been set... see below.

What happens if you enter your user/admin password?

What about Internet Recovery: Option Command R

Lock icon

If your Mac is using a firmware password, the lock icon appears when you try to start up from another disk or volume, such as an external drive or macOS Recovery. Enter the firmware password to continue.
