white background in finder instead of white and grey lines

I started my laptop this morning and the white and grey lines behind items in list view have disappeared from the finder. I have some screenshots attached so you can see what the problem is. I have observed though that when windows overlap you can see the lines at the edge of the overlapping window.

Does anybody have an idea on how to fix this?

I came to understand that my external monitor was not properly set up and when the contrast is too high you can't see it on the monitor but you can on the screenshots.
