Hi there, jimkempster!

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! It sound s like your MacBook Pro is randomly inserting periods when you type. I recommend taking a look at this article with steps to follow to Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac. This will perform checks and stop certain software from starting up automatically. Once you are in safe mode, test to see if you have the same issue.

I also suggest checking out this article for Keyboard Service Program for MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro to see if you qualify for the program if you still have an issue after trying safe mode.

Have a great day!

I wanted to comment that MY MacBook Pro does the same, but ONLY when using my MacBook's keyboard. When I attach an external keyboard it doesn't happen. To ME, that points to it being an issue with the built-in keyboard, not a software issue. Right?
