In short - Garageband is a tool to make music. You can record your voice or musical instruments as you play an instrument. And you can synthesise music with virtual instruments or midi tracks or have drummers and other smart instruments play along automatically. Use it to create your own songs or sound tracks for slideshows or home videos. Or simply use it to record old vinyl records or audio tapes. It can be a lot of fun to have a whole music studio to create backing tracks for your own singing or playing.

GarageBand is needing a lot of storage for the loops and virtual instruments for a realistic sound. You can remove the sounds and loops from the "Manage Storage" dialog and download selectively only the songs you need and want to use.
