Backing up Macbook Air with Time Machine

What external drive should I buy to work with Apple Time Machine for backup? I have never used TimeMachine before now. thank you

You can get any drive (mechanical or SSD) but get one large enough in size perhaps 2x your internal drive. Be sure to follow the formatting requirements.

Any USB external drive can be TimeMachine drive.
