After the iOS 14.5 update I can no longer open an app that contains my pictures. I get a message that says the app must be updated. The problem is I do not know how to update the app. Can someone help please!

If you were using some kind of 3rd party photo vault app, it's likely been abandoned by the developer and was not updated for compatibility with the current version of iOS.
Contact the developer of the app for support.
Ask the developer of that App.
They must update it.
The only question is....... are they willing to do that.
