iPad (8th Gen) and WD My Passport SSD 1TB

I have an iPad 8th gen (128GB WiFi) and a WD My Passport SSD 1TB.

I chatted with apple support and they recommended I get the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter because the SSD is bus powered and I need more power. So I did.

I plugged the adapter into the iPad, the lightning power cord into the lightning port on the adapter, and the WD My Passport SSD into the USB-A port. The iPad shows it is connected to power.

The WD My Passport SSD will sometime connect but then I am getting an error saying:

"Cannot Use Accessory

My Passport 264F: This accessory requires too much power."

That's the whole point of this adapter and it's recommended on apple.com for the same reason.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

So, I talked to Apple support again, and they had nothing more for me other than, go to your local Apple Store.

So, I put a powered USB hub plugged into the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, attached the My Passport SSD to the hub and it worked. I could even open up a 100MB Photoshop file from the SSD in Photoshop for iPad.

In my experience, the statement above that says "This provides power to your iOS device and connected device." is incorrect. In my experience, it basically just lets you keep powering your iOS device while connecting USB-A devices.

Takeaway: You need a powered USB hub for anything that draws power to operate.
