Hello, LetLoveEmerge.

To help you best, can you please tell us what model and year your Mac is?

What macOS version do you believe is installed on the Mac?

It may be that your Recovery partition has been damaged or deleted, or that the startup drive does not have a recovery partition on it.

You might try using option-command-R or shift-option-command-R to boot into internet recovery mode.

See if Safe Mode even works...

Start up a Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
  2. After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds.
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until the startup options window appears showing available startup disks and Options.
  4. Select a startup disk.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, click Continue in Safe Mode, then release the Shift key.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac normally, without pressing and holding any keys during startup.

It's a 2020 iMac and when I reformatted it, it had Catalina on there.

I was finally able to get into Recovery mode by connecting the iMac to my router via ethernet cable. It's my boss' computer and it was the first time being used in my home wi-fi so maybe thats why it couldn't connect in it's mangled state.

Problem was that he deleted his HD in Recovery mode so I had to erase the whole thing and reinstall Catalina and then upgrade to Big Sur. Now it works like a charm.
