Unknown device associated with my apple id

There is a device i do not recognise associated with my ID and I'm having difficulty removing it. Any ideas how it might have got there?

Someone must know your Apple ID and password. You might want to consider changing your password and making sure it is a strong one. You can also add 2 Factor Authentication to your account for more security. If the attempts continue, you might want to consider a name change.

I'm not sure but I don't think it was a deliberate act and it is a total mystery. I had difficulty removing the unknown device as I couldn't answer the security questions correctly. In the end I still managed to sign in and I deleted the account, only I think I have deleted someone elses acount, which lets face it shouldn't be able to. It revolves around gmail email adresses used as appleID's. A google email adresss ignores the "full stop" in the address. So ***@gmail should be the same as ***@gmail. Apple however sees them as two different addresses. How 2 people with seemingly the same name managed to share a password I'm not sure, seems very unlikely but I did manage to sign in to another persons account and delete it.
