Flashing white file folder with a black question mark on Mac

When I turn on my Mac book pro, I get a flashing white file folder with a black question mark on it. There is also an address underneath it: support.apple.com/startup.

It means that the Mac cannot find a bootable volume. The main reasons for this is a corrupt file system, damaged or missing OS, or a bad drive.
