You can always use your Apple Watch when your iPhone is nearby.

The cellular Apple Watch does not support roaming, so while away from you carrier’s coverage area, the Apple Watch will act like a GPS only model and use the iPhone’s cellular radio.

This all assumes, your iPhone carrier supports roaming, or you got a local SIM or eSIM.

NOTE: The Apple Watch has a regional cellular radio.

o Canada, U.S., Mexico, Puerto Rico

o And the rest of the world.
