Will time machine automatically backup the external hard drive I use, as well as the contents of the internal hard drive in my macbook??

Yes. Just make sure it hasn't been added to the Exclude list in the Options section of the Time Machine preference pane. I have two external hard drives that get backed up along with my internal boot drive.
