Upgrading older iMac with 1 TB

How do I upgrade my current iMac (27-inch, late 2013) to support the latest OS (Big Sur)?

It’s trivial to connect a chunk of a petabyte (“lots”) off an iMac, or a whole lot of fast SSD storage, if you have the budget for that sort of thing. Not internal, but ample, and very fast. This at the cost of another wire or two, and some external boxes.

The iMac 24” is a replacement for the iMac 21.5” model too, less so the iMac 27”. What (if anything) or when we might see something replace the still-available Intel iMac 27” model?
