If I have two thunderbolt equipped Macs, can I make a network connection between the two with only a thunderbolt cable ?

I have two Macs, a Late 2015 iMac 27' and a new MacBook Pro 2021 M1. Can I make a local network connection between the two using a thunderbolt cable ? can that work between different thunderbolt versions by using the very good Apple Thunderbolt 2 -> Thunderbolt 3 adapter ? Many thanks for your help.

iMac 27″, macOS 12.0
