Accidental upload to iCloud

If I ACCIDENTALLY copied all photos from my iMac to iCloud, how can I delete them from the Cloud without their disappearing on my iMac and all other devices? In fact, all documents, email, and many other files and folders I never intended to store on the Cloud also suddenly got copied onto the Cloud, using up ALL my Cloud space. I never intended to keep all these things on the Cloud. Desperate. Apple Support didn't even seem to grasp my problem. I hope someone else can help me solve this. What I THINK I'm reading in various Apple info. places is that if you delete something from the Cloud it also deletes it on all your devices. This just doesn't make sense to me at all.

Thanks, Gwynedd

Hi Gwynedd,

Welcome to the Apple Community.

Seems iCloud syncs everything it is set up to sync.

Wondering if you might want to put all precious files,

that you want to be sure of keeping safe, on a purchased back-up hard-drive.

Time machine is one simple way to back up all files from your iMac.

Your iCloud settings will determine what iCloud syncs.

Apple support have a useful online "iCloud User Guide:"

(You might want to click the "Table of Contents" for more info, or use the "Search")

Example: Turn iCloud features on or off (Scroll down for Mac)

Eg: Manage your iCloud storage:
